May 11 Heavy Loads At Main Lift Concerns City
Restrictions Now At Phase 3 Of 5
KCSi-T.V. News

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports, a long term plan, based on public comment, and input from political subdivisions, will be released later this week. The consensus in Jamestown and downstream is to release a combined 3,200 cfs, over a longer period of time in order to keep infrastructure damage to a miminum. The Corps Monday held a pre-construction conference with Guthmiller Construction of Medina, who is handling levee construction repair needs. Todd Lindquist, at the Monday Interagency meeting also said the end of May looks possible to reduced releases from Jamestown and Pipestem Dams....MORE STORY BELOW VIDEO....

City Engineer, Reed Schwartzkopf has put together a five phase plan for emergency usage of the sanitary sewer system. Each phase is more restrictive, starting with conservation and discharging sump pumps outdoors, to closing off lift stations, and presently in phase 3 out of 5 including draining lagoon cells prematurely into the river to gain capacity, draining up to 4 (the current number of) lift stations into the river, and performing studies to determine flow rates and constituents of certain portions of the sanitary sewer system. The next phase includes the possible plugging and turning off the water supply in areas determined to be high in sanitary sewer usage, and provide porta potties to those area. Phase five is the complete shut down of the Jamestown city sanitary sewer system, and the entire water supply. (see separate link for the news release). In order to not have the final two phases implemented, the city will likely order an odd-even daily heavy usage of the system based on the calendar date, and house or building number. Heavy usage includes laundry, using dishwashers and any high water consumption activity that will add large amounts of discharges down the drain. He says that will cut down on the number of "spikes" in the system which throws a heavy load into the lift station pumping.

Schwartzkopf Monday said the main lift station is still pumping between 6 and a half and 8 million gallons per day, the extreme high end of its range. Due to high usage some lift stations pumps have burned out.

Beth Dewald of the Buffalo Valley Red Cross Chapter announced that church groups in Jamestown have organized an ecumenical gathering on May 19th at 5:19-p.m., (5-19-@5:19) at the Civic Center parking lot. In the event of bad weather the gathering will be moved inside the Civic Center.
The gathering is to show community stength, unity and support during the flood fight. She also said, a Stutman County "unmet needs committee" is being formed to provide individuals and, or families with assistance that may not have been covered under assistance programs.
