High Water At Arrowwood
Two Levees Fail
KENSAL, N.D. (AP) - Officials at Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge say the primary dike around the lake headquarters has failed and another one is leaking, but they believe a third dike protecting the office, visitors center and residences can withstand the James River.
The refuge is north of the Jamestown Dam near Kensal.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service project leader Kim Hanson said the primary dike on Arrowwood Lake was built to withstand water up to 1,453 feet. He said that dike failed Monday and a secondary dike built to 1,455 feet is leaking. The one in front of the office, built to 1,460 feet, appears to be holding.
Arrowwood workers have removed equipment and items that could pollute water. Hanson said some items, such as picnic tables, could not be removed and floated down the river.
