BASKETBALL-WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS...
ISTANBUL (AP) - The United States stayed perfect at the
basketball World Championships and have a top seed to prove it.
The Americans dumped Iran 88-51 to lock up the top spot in Group
B. Kevin Love scored 13 and Kevin Durant added 12 to pace the
American to their fourth win in as many games.
TENNIS-US OPEN...
NEW YORK (AP) - Ninth-seed Andy Roddick was upset in the second
round of the U.S. Open, losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 to 44th-ranked
Janko Tipsarevic (YAHN'-koh tihp-SAYR'-oh-vihch) of Serbia.
Roddick won his only Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in
2003, and he also was the runner-up in 2006. His loss leaves Roger
Federer as the only past men's champion in the field.
This early exit follows a fourth-round loss for Roddick at
Wimbledon. He revealed recently that he had a mild case of
mononucleosis.
Tipsarevic moves into the third round at the U.S. Open for the
first time.
In other men's play:
American teenager Ryan Harrison upset 15th-seeded Ivan Ljubicic
(LOOB'-ih-sihch) 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 for his first Grand Slam
match victory. The 18-year-old Harrison made his Grand Slam debut
in January at the Australian Open, losing in the first round.
Seventh-seed Tomas Berdych (BUR'-dihch) didn't make it past the
first round. He was upset by France's Michael Llodra 7-6
(loh-DRAH'), 6-4, 6-4.
Fourth seed Andy Murray rolled to a straight sets win by beating
Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The 20th-seeded Sam Querrey of the U.S.
defeated fellow American Bradley Klahn 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In women's results:
Second-seed and defending champ Kim Clijsters (KLY'-sturz)
reached the third round by beating 201st-ranked qualifier Sally
Peers of Australia 6-2, 6-1.
Third-seed Venus Williams struggled during the early portions of
her 7-6, 6-3 second-round win over Rebecca Marino. Williams rallied
after trailing the Canadian 4-1 in the tiebreaker.
Thirteenth-seed Marion Bartoli was upset by France's Virginie
Razzano 7-5, 6-4.
Melanie Oudin (oo-DAN'), a quarterfinalist last year, had 38
unforced errors and just four winners in her straight-set loss to
Alona Bondarenko.
